Maplewood Richmond Heights theatre students will perform the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest February 28-March 2, 2013 at the MRH High School Theatre.

Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was adapted for the stage by Dale Wasserman. It premiered on Broadway in 1963, with Kirk Douglas in the leading role as Randle Patrick McMurphy. The protagonist is a wildly funny rebel who feigns insanity in order to finish his prison sentence in a mental ward rather than a work farm. However, when he meets the fellow members of the asylum, he discovers that they make a lot more sense than the restrictive and conformist establishment, embodied by a control-freak named Nurse Ratched.

Earlier this month, junior John O’Keefe received two awards recognizing his achievements in science. His first award was the JSEHS (Junior Science, Engineering, and Humanities Symposium) award, and the other was the Participation and Excellent Performance in Science award. These awards recognize excellence in student work in the areas of science and publication of science research.

MRH earned fourth place in math and science in the annual 2013 Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge. More than 200 students from 10 St. Louis area high schools competed at McKendree University on Feb. 8 in the St. Louis Regional tournament of the WYSE competition. Several MRH students will participate in the sectionals level of the competition before Spring Break for a science and math challenge. Students participating are Marquise White, Morgan Patterson Gill, Logan Doering, Beth Robberson, Daylee Hopson, Zach Russell, Will Tipton, Cecil Morgan, Kira Kelsay, Christine Parham, Essence Daniels-Brewer, Mariah Russell, Anna Wermuth, and Jonas Tiggs.
These students, and O’Keefe, have shown MRH the exceptional effort it takes to succeed in Science, and also set a great example for other MRH students.

Special Message Regarding QuikTrip from the MRH Board of Education

$

Dear MRH Family:

In March of last year, the MRH Board of Education sent a letter to all of our parents to convey our concerns about the proposed move of the Maplewood QuikTrip from its current location at 3010 Big Bend Boulevard to the northwest corner of Manchester Road and Big Bend.  At that time, we voiced our concerns for student safety and the impact to the surrounding neighborhood to the City of Maplewood and QuikTrip.

Over the past year, the Board of Education, as well as many District parents and community members, have been involved in ongoing meetings and negotiations with QuikTrip, the City of Maplewood, and St. Louis County to try and make the development as safe as possible, and with the least amount of impact to our residential neighborhood.

On November 27, 2012 the City of Maplewood passed Ordinance No. 5689, which provides the approval for QuikTrip to relocate.  Unfortunately, the Ordinance, as passed (and the form in which it exists today), contains many aspects we still feel are harmful to safety and our neighborhood residents.   Some of these aspects include a new “cut-through” road from Big Bend Boulevard to Martini Drive at 2547 Big Bend, the closure of Martini Drive at the northern property line of QuikTrip, and inadequate safety signage and crosswalks.

After the Ordinance was passed a group of independent community members came together and gathered signatures to place a referendum on the April 2 ballot known as “Proposition Q.”  This ballot initiative, and what voters will be voting on, refers to the Ordinance as approved on November 27, 2012.   Unfortunately, recent discussions regarding amendments and additional safety measures to Ordinance No. 5689 have not been approved; thus leaving the Ordinance in its original form.

We had hoped for a new Ordinance approved by the City of Maplewood prior to the April 2 election or that the current one would have been repealed.  Unfortunately this has not happened. After much consideration and discussions with our constituents, the Board of Education must reaffirm its adopted Resolution to not endorse the Ordinance in its current form.

Again the District is committed to working with the City of Maplewood to promote business, collaboration, and safety within our community.  Only working together can we continue to build upon our community’s successes.

Sincerely,

Maria Langston, President

MRH Announces Snow Make Up Day

Dear MRH Parent/Guardian(s):

As you know, the MRH School District was closed for three days this winter due to the weather. We need to make up one of the days up in order to meet our educational goals for the year and to meet the state minimum number of school days.

As such, this previously scheduled day off for students will now be a regular school day:
SNOW MAKE UP DAY:  Friday, April 19, 2013

In working with our administrative team, we believe this is a good solution, as we won’t need to extend the school year and reschedule the end-of-year events such as finals and promotion/graduation ceremonies.

I look forward to another successful semester and thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, please contact me at (314) 644-4400.

Sincerely,

Karen I. Hall
Superintendent

Future Looking Bright for the MRH School District

Earlier this year the MRH district installed 40 solar panels on the cafeteria’s roof as part of the Solar Energy Savings by Microgrid Energy. These solar modules cover the roof of the MRH cafeteria with a capacity of over 9,600 watts. Not only do the solar panels supply an effective amount of energy, but they also reduce the cost of the school’s electric bill.

“I think it’s amazing that we are saving energy especially because of all the energy we use for our computers,”  says freshmen Maja Eernisse.

Chef Robert Rusan said the panels show how our school can use sustainable energy.  “If we can cut down on fossil fuels and use natural energy, that is a great thing,” said Rusan. Having solar panels at the high school has already conserved 30 kilowatt hours per day (kwh/day) with a carbon offset of over 797 lbs a month, which is an equivalent of nine trees. In addition, these solar panels supply the cafeteria and school with over 12,300 kwh of energy a year.

Freshman Cameron Clemmons says he’d like to see even more.  ”It’s pretty cool that we have solar panels to conserve energy in the school. You don't see them at a lot of schools around here ” said Clemmons. Not only do solar panels help save high rising energy costs, but science teachers now have an example of solar power to use in their curriculum. The solar panels give students a real-life example of sustainable living to study.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights High School Physical Education Department recently received a $1,000 grant from United Health HEROES to implement the program Walk Away from Obesity.

Over 130 MRH students have been selected from MRH Physical Education Classes to participate in the Walk Away from Obesity service-learning project. The students have been challenged to walk a distance of 50 miles during their physical education classes between the start of the project on January 2 and the conclusion of the project on May 3.

Student learning has focused on the value of building physical activity into their everyday lives, while promoting a community awareness of health and wellness.

The Walk Away from Obesity project culminates with two special three-week walking programs beginning this week:

The Dine and Dash

  • The Dine and Dash is a three-week walking challenge for the students and staff of MRH High School to see who can walk the furthest during their lunch breaks.

The Test Run

  • The Test Run is a school initiated research study that is aimed to support recent research suggesting that physical activity in class can improve test scores.  Where MRH’s schedule permits students are being engaged in 10-30 minutes of moderate to vigorous walking prior to taking the State EOC (End Of Course) Tests. Upon completion of testing MRH will compare test scores of students who participated in moderate to vigorous physical activity to those who did not.

Spring Sports Update

As winter sports come to a close, athletes and coaches quickly regroup and begin intense preparation for upcoming spring sports. Spring sports at MRH include girl’s soccer, baseball, and track and field. Each sport brings a range of talented student athletes dedicated to the success of their team.

MRH girl’s soccer coach, Amber Godfrey, is expecting a strong season for this year’s team. “My expectations are very high this season, we have a good group of girls that came out this season. The girls have worked hard in the off season; playing in a league and working out in open gyms and stuff. I’m really excited about the season and I hope the girls see their hard work pay off,” said Godfrey. The team has their own expectations and predict a much better season than previous years. “I think we have a good solid team, and I think that we really click well on and off the field and we have potential to be great just like any other team,” said freshman Maria Faulkingham. “We have been practicing in the off season a lot more, and practicing by ourselves at home and on Wednesday mornings we come in and we have been working out a lot more,” said sophomore Gracie Biedenstein, one of the team’s three captains.

Baseball has also been working hard in the offseason and hope to capture a district championship. “We got a solid young group we’ve talked all season and preseason about how long it’s been since this school has won district championship,” said head baseball coach Jonathan Webb. A conference championship might also be in their future too if they continue to work hard. “We have very high expectation coming into this season. Our conference and our district are wide open for the taking, with Brentwood and Valley Park losing some key players from their teams, so it’s up to us to go in and take it,” said senior William Wadsworth.

Track and Field are heading for yet another title in state. “I know it’s early but we have a lot of people returning from last season and we did pretty well at state last year,” said head girl’s track coach Cheryl Carmon. I expect the girls team to place in the top 3 at state. That would be a great outcome if we could have that happen.” Individuals on the track team also have high expectations for themselves. “Last year I won state, so this year I plan on getting my title back on the 200 and also hopefully the 400 or the 100,” said junior Essence Brewer.

Track and Field, Baseball, and girls soccer are hard at work to make their spring season bloom to its fullest potential. With the MRH community behind them we know they will succeed.

MRH Jazz Band Jams with Local Musician

In an effort to teach students more about music, Career Director John Capuano brought in local St. Louis musician Pierce Crask. Crask played the guitar along with several other instruments with a section of the MRH high school band: juniors Zach Arias and John O’Keefe, freshman Dylan Kiefer and sophomore Paul Meuser. The students performed in the band room with Crask in front of several MRH middle school students and a few high school students. Not only did the some students have a spectacular time playing with Pierce, but they also got the chance to learn professional techniques. Junior Zach Arias says that jamming with Pierce wasn’t only cool, but also interesting to learn too. “Playing with Pierce was cool because he brings a lot to the table that I’m not really familiar with,” said Arias.

Junior John O’Keefe said that is was cool also and that it was good that his middle school students got to learn new things from this performance.  “It was really cool to be able to do a jam session with Pierce,” said O’Keefe. “It was the second time that we had worked with him and this time we had a little bit more of a repertoire going into it. We had talked Zach and I both some of our students some of his songs and they got to play along, which was a really good experience for them,” O’Keefe said.

This was the second time Crask came in to visit and teach the students. Crask came to MRH earlier in the year when he told students about his career. The students got the chance to learn and ask a lot of questions. Before Pierce came in for the second time the band students taught each other some of Crask’s music to prepare themselves for the second time he would come in.

According to Capuano, the visit gave students the opportunity to expand their knowledge. “This was a follow up jam session to kind of push their limits and have them work their musical skill to a higher level,” said Capuano. Crask taught several great techniques to learn and brought brand new skills to teach the students. This was not only a great learning experience, but it was also a big leap from playing with each other to playing with someone who has played for a living and played what he loved.

MRH High School Students Chosen for the Missouri Scholars Academy

$

Paul Meuser and Anna WermuthFor the first time in MRH history, two MRH High School sophomores, Anna Wermuth and Paul Meuser (pictured at right with MRH Superintendent Karen I. Hall), were nominated and accepted into the prestigious Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA). Only 330 of the top academic sophomores in the State of Missouri are selected to attend.  From a pool of over 800 nominees, only 330 are selected based on their academic achievements, teacher recommendations and student essays. The Missouri Scholars Academy began in 1985 and is beginning to host its 29th cohort of students.

What Is the Missouri Scholars Academy
The Missouri Scholars Academy seeks to help gifted high school students achieve their full potential; to motivate them to use their abilities in attaining higher goals; and to encourage local schools to establish and/or improve programs for academically gifted youth by providing leadership in developing curriculum and innovative teaching strategies.

The Missouri Scholars Academy is a three-week, residential summer program held on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri. It provides unique opportunities for students to enhance their academic skills; assimilate the accumulated knowledge of their culture; relate to contemporary issues; deepen understanding of themselves and their unique abilities; and engage with others in critical thinking and problem-solving activities. Students must be residents of Missouri and be nominated by their public or private Missouri high schools to be considered for admission. Participants are drawn from across Missouri and represent the diversity of the state. The program is singularly free from competition, creating an environment that is conducive to building a community of friends and colleagues. Participants have a chance to know and make friends with other students who’ve demonstrated a commitment to academic pursuits. The give-and-take among students from different backgrounds is one of the most treasured aspects of the program.

What it’s Like
Students live in a college dormitory with separate quarters for men and women. They learn a great deal about themselves and others, as they live together in community and develop long-lasting friendships. The program provides students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to share the joy and discovery of learning and to exchange ideas in a caring community. A select group of teachers and mentors, chosen from across the state, works closely with the students in classes, seminars, and co-curricular activities. Well-known speakers and instructors, as well as special events and recreational opportunities provide an array of stimulating activities that offer fun and enjoyment, along with learning.

Program
The program moves at a swift pace and contains advanced level content as students explore abstract concepts, theory, and interdisciplinary curriculum. Each student has a major field of study, as well as a minor field. Students are expected to attend daily classes for the entire three-week academy and to participate fully in the instructional and social life of the community. Nominees should be an excellent representative of their district, functioning well in the school and community setting, and mature enough to live away from home successfully.

Across the Wide Missouri...

MRH Choral DepartmentThe MRH Choral department will be presenting music totally inspired by Missouri on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the MRH Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public.

Many of the selections to be performed were written by native Missourians. The MRHMS Choir will perform two pieces by St. Louis musician’s Jerry Estes (Choir Director, Wydown Middle School, Clayton) and Cornell “Nelly” Haynes (Grammy Winning Hip Hop Artist). The Concert Choir will be performing pieces from Virgil Thomson (Kansas City) and Howard Helvey (Columbia).

Both choirs will perform selections by Sasha Johnson Manning, the English native who served as the St. Louis Chamber Chorus’ (SLCC) Composer-in-Residence. Sasha recently came from her home in Manchester, U.K. to premiere a piece for the SLCC and also worked with the MRH choral students in preparation for their upcoming performance. The students will combine to sing He Never Failed Me Yet, by Robert Ray (St. Louis) and premiere an arrangement of Don’t Get Trouble In Your Mind, by Williams Chiles (Springfield).

In addition to featuring compositions by Missouri composers, the MRH Choral Department will perform music inspired by the words and works of Walt Disney and Tennessee Williams. Walt Disney was not born in Missouri, but lived in Marceline and Kansas City for many years. Tennessee Williams also moved to Missouri during his childhood. He and his family relocated to St. Louis from Columbus, Mississippi and Williams briefly studied Journalism at the University of Missouri. After a considerable amount of time, Tennessee Williams returned to his studies completed his college education at Washington University.
